Meet The Smiths: Why This Blog?
If you've tuned in to this blog for the first time, we first want to say THANK YOU, and welcome to OuiDoux's very first post! We're Brian & Maya Smith (that's us in the photo above trying to look artsy and serious). For the cliff notes on the who we are and why you might care, check out our "about" page here. In short, we're married high school sweethearts with a house full of boys. He's a photographer with a day job, She's a hairstylist-turned-brand design consultant. We work together, building our hair care brand, The Doux™, managing our business, The Doux Salon™, and creating all types of visual freshness, from Brian's Doux Life Photo®, to a soon-to be launched brand identity development firm, Doux Creative®.
We're often asked, "Who shoots your photos?", or "Who does your branding?", or "Who decorates your spaces?". Our answer is always the same: "We do!" We decided to launch OuiDoux, because we realized that lots of creative entrepreneurs like us begin building their empires with a little budget and big dreams. Having limited resources usually means spending much of our time behind the scenes "douxing" lots of the work ourselves, relying on teamwork to make the dream work. If we're honest, we're usually pretty hush about the sacrifices we make, particularly when both partners have chosen to ditch the 9 to 5, and pursue their creative ambitions. Not to mention the sleepless nights, financial finagling, or the balancing act we experience when trying to provide stability for our kids. We find ourselves at dinner parties and social gatherings feeling pretty obscure, and sometimes even judged, when people are fascinated by what we do, but can't relate to the day-to-day challenges of living in a place we like to call "Freelancia". If you feel us, Ouidoux is for you!
We're starting this blog to share an authentic account of what happens when Creatives not only collaborate, but cohabitate: the work, the process, the fun, and the ongoing challenge of feeding 5 kids while unapologetically doing what we love. In addition to sharing some of what we "doux", you'll have a chance to learn what we love: the cool people, places and things that inspire our work. We know that our story is one of many, but ifyou're a creative entrepreneur, or just shacking up with one, we're sure you'll enjoy the transparency, realness, and humor of our modern family living the Doux Life. Again, welcome to OuiDoux!
